【摘要】:Hexavalentchromiumsaltsareusedextensivelyinthemetalfinishingandplatingindustries,intheleatherindustryasatanningagent,andinthemanufactureofpaints,dyes,explosives,andceramics.Trivalentchromiumsaltsareusedasmordantsintextiledying,intheceramicandglassindustry,andinphotography.Chromium,ineitheroxidationstate,maybepresentinwastewaterfromtheseindustriesandmayalsobedischargedfromchromate-treatedcoolingwaters.Hexavalentchromiumistoxictohumans,animals,andaquaticlife.Itcanproducelungtumorswheninhaledandreadilyinducesskinsensitization.Itisnotknownwhethercancerwillresultfromingestionofchromiuminanyofitsvalencestates.Ionchromatographyprovidesameansofseparatingthehexavalentchromiumfromotherspeciespresentinthesample,manyofwhichinterferewithotherdetectionmethods.Thecombinationofthisseparationwithasensitivecolorimetricdetectionmethodprovidesaselectiveandsensitiveanalyticalmethodforhexavalentchromiumwithminimalsamplepreparation.1.1Thistestmethodcoversproceduresforthedeterminationofdissolvedhexavalentchromiuminwastewater,surfacewater,anddrinkingwater.1.2Theprecisionandbiasofthistestmethodhasbeentestedinreagentwaterandindustrialwastewaterandhasbeenfoundsuitableovertherangeofapproximately1to1000956;g/L.Seefordetails.Higherlevelscanbedeterminedbyappropriatedilution.1.3Samplescontainingveryhighlevelsofanionicspecies(thatis,chloride,sulfate,etc.)maycausecolumnoverload.Samplescontaininghighlevelsofreducingspecies(thatis,sulfides,sulfites,etc.)maycausereductionofCr(VI)toCr(III).ThiscanbeminimizedbybufferingthesampletoapHof9to9.5,filteringit,storingitat4176;Candanalyzingitwithin24h.1.4ThevaluesstatedinSIunitsaretoberegardedasthestandard.1.5Thisstandarddoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthesafetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itistheresponsibilityoftheuserofthisstandardtoestablishappropriatesafetyandhealthpracticesanddeterminetheapplicabilityofregulatorylimitationspriortouse.
